ELECTRICAL CONTRACTORS SINCE 2003
A 500MW power plant in Central Massachusetts rarely used their rooftop 80-ton capacity crane for critical lifts during preventative maintenance outages. The crude two-speed, across the line controls associated with both the traverse and hoisting motions made the movements abrupt and exact placement of load nearly impossible. In addition, this crane could not travel out far enough from the building to effectively load components on trailers. This was completely unsuitable for dismantling and assembling their turbines and generators. PES proposed a design-build solution, which involved removing the entire hoist and trolley assembly, commissioning a new custom-built assembly to replace it and installing it in its place as well as removing all of the bridge motion motors and having them rewound to be inverter duty rated. All of the old control panels were removed, new VFD control systems designed, fabricated and installed, then integrated with the new equipment. A second phase to the upgrade involved extending the portion of the runway off of the end of the building to improve hook approach. After this upgrade was completed, a full load test was performed to ensure optimal performance and set up of the new VFD controllers. The result is a gantry crane that has smooth, accurate control in all motions that they now utilize for all of their equipment service and maintenance.
